Holiday Horror Stories
Fri Dec 29, 2006 at 05:29:22 PM PDT
I'm not talking about executions, or global warming, or conspicuous capitalism gone wild.
No, I'm talking about those stories where the dog pulled the turkey off the counter minutes before dinner. Or when Grandma drank so much egg nog she passed out face first in the pumpkin pie. Or the time cousin Melanie decided to demonstrate her talent at pole-dancing.
Inspired by this story on All Things Considered today--and in need of working off some post-Christmas stress, not to mention having to gear up for the next round on December 31--I'm asking you for your help by sharing some of your holiday disaster tales.
My contribution after the flip...
Hawaii upsets #5 USC!
Sat Dec 09, 2006 at 12:27:52 AM PDT
The 12th seeded UH Rainbow Wahine move on to the NCAA volleybal regional finals after upsetting USC 28-30, 30-21, 21-30, 30-27, 15-5. All-American setter Kanoe Kamanao topped it off by serving 11 straight points in the final game.
Much will be made of Jamie Houston's career-high 35 kills (and there's no doubt that her arm won this match),but my favorite game moment was when the 5'8" setter solo stuffed 6-foot-3 middleblocker Bethany Johnson in game 4. ROOF!
One of the 7000+ strong crowd's favorite is freshman libero Jayme Lee. The local girl threw her 5'2" body around the court with some amazing digs. Not bad for someone who was playing at Sacred Hearts high school this time last year.

GOP chairman accused of 'race-baiting'
By his fellow Republicans. As reported in the
Grand Rapids Press, local Goopers are trying to oust state Republican Chair Saul Anuzis because of losses in West Michigan last Tuesday.
Race baiting? In Grand Rapids? Did somebody get confused about the "Southern Strategy"?
As Kos has mentioned, there's enough credit to go around for everybody for last Tuesday's Big Blue Wave. And on the other side, it looks like there's plenty of blame getting thrown around, too. And I, frankly, am not ashamed to admit that watching the conservative circular firing squad is highly entertaining.
Grab a bag of popcorn and pull up a seat.

Reproductive rights have always been about access. More specifically, who controls access to the medical services necessary for reproductive rights to have any meaning. Upper middle class women (or the women of upper middle class men) have always had access. Even when abortion became illegal in the United States, there was the option of a sojourn to Europe or a tour of Japan even if one didn't have the "understanding" physician who was willing to "protect" someone's reputation.
Snarkfest! Bush Writes a Book
Mon Jul 10, 2006 at 06:43:57 PM PDT
As noted on
Political Wire, there's
whispering that Bush is writing a book. His memo-wars as it may be.
This may come as quite a shock to some of us who are not entirely convinced that the Liar in Chief can read, much less write them down.
Let us take advantage of this gift, then, to put on our very best snark beanies and enter The First Annual Create a Title for Bush contest.
Winner gets TU for life*.
Colin Powell: Cold War Capitalist Warrior
Mon Dec 05, 2005 at 08:37:22 PM PDT
Note: I'm posting this for a newbie who doesn't have privileges yet. He's a freshman at a liberal arts college in the Northwest who recently attended a talk by Colin Powell at his school.
I recently had the lucky chance to hear General Colin Powell speak at a Question and Answer forum. I do not use the words "lucky chance" without reason; to me this really was a great opportunity. As political active citizens, we, myself definitely included, some times get intensely wrapped up in our political views and allow such blindness as an acceptable excuse to fail to listen. So when I went to this forum I had hopes to gain some insight into the person, if not the politics, behind the former Secretary of State.
General Colin Powell was much as you would expect of a man who served 35 years in the military and Secretary of State for the current Bush administration. The questions were varied across a multitude of topics and I will attempt to piece them together, hopefully coherently and more importantly accurately, in this entry.
BROKEN! Bad Weather! Bad Guys! Cheap Cialis!
Thu Oct 20, 2005 at 06:08:58 PM PDT
Heh. Not. But I am doing some serious pimping here, so lissen up.
Our very own Bill in Portland Maine has an amazing opportunity this weekend and he is asking all Kossacks to join in and participate in it with him.
And, no, it doesn't involve hottubs. Or pooties. Or pea flicking.
It will however involve the incomparable DNC Chair Dr. Howard Dean and Bill wants to pass along your love to him.
Go see I'm Seeing Dean this Weekend and get your message hand-delivered to Dr. Dean.
Why I love [the White] Sox
Sat Oct 01, 2005 at 05:34:53 PM PDT
Note: This diary is being written to fulfill a promise that I made to jdog. Doggie hasn't been seen in these here parts for a few weeks now and may not even see this. But I aim to honor that promise (okay, okay--it was a bet if you want to be technical about it), because if there's one thing I know about jdog, it's that he honors his word and he keeps up his side of a bargain. Always. So, if anything, this diary is to honor him. I wish we had more like him in this sorry world.
There will probably be some grumpy pants that will whine and complain that this is a waste of bandwidth/their time/pixels. A fart on you. When this promise was made (30,000 users ago), DailyKos was a site where having a good time on a Saturday night was not only permissible, it was expected. And if, even after all this, you insist on peeing in the kiddie pool, then I invite all merry pranksters to flick peas, snark, and post a recipe for jdog.
Why I Love Sox. Find out on the flip.
Still another 3.0 poll (for orange-haters)
Fri Jun 24, 2005 at 12:19:01 PM PDT
But this one is really good. Honest. (Actually I'm just filling up space here to make sure that I don't violate the "No single-line" diary rule).
If you were wondering why your eyes feel like they've been poked with a sharpened chopstick, go see the archive shot of the old design that Kos magnanimously posted
here. Compared to the "new" orange, the old one looks positively green.
The comparison also helps me appreciate some of the design changes. It is a cleaner look overall. But some of the stuff, I just don't get--like what is the little bits of orange graphics around the logo which end in what looks like the bottom half of a t-shirt in the right column?
on to the poll...
The End of Moderation or Maybe Nader Was Right
Wed Apr 13, 2005 at 02:07:37 AM PDT
Let's step back in time for a moment to the train wreck known as the 2000 Presidential election. We know that Al Gore got more votes than Bush. We suspect that if Nader hadn't been on the ballot, the nearly 3 million votes he received, especially the 97,000+ in Florida, Bush v. Gore might have remained just a bad dream. So would have Tennessee's 11 electoral college votes.
But the question I'm pondering is Nader's assertion that there was no difference between the Republican or the Democratic party. That both
are both so marginal on the great issue of the distribution of power and wealth, and the corruption of cash register politics, that whatever real differences they are willing to fight for pale in comparison to the major subjects they are exactly on the same page on.
The Republican's success in 2004, I want to suggest, may be due to the fact that they took Nader seriously. And did something about it.

Masters of Snark Edition
As I mentioned here, the Texas Observer is one of my lifelines to sanity in these dark ages. This month, they prove themselves worthy once again, with snarkability that most of us can only aspire to, by awarding the First Annual Tommy Award for Ethics in Government to...

Table for Four
Fri Apr 01, 2005 at 05:55:00 PM PDT
The room was all soft lights, Italianate flooring, thick, creamy linens, and sweet, soft jazz in the background. The air, redolent with reductions finished with sweet butter, the barest hint of tarragon, an undertone of gamay beaujolais. Silverware clinked lightly against china. The relaxed murmur of conversations, the low, throaty laughter of beautiful women and impeccably groomed men swirled through the space.
Albert's gaze swept the room--no detail would escape his scrutiny, a misaligned fork, a half-empty wine glass were like pimples on the rump of Michelangelo's David. Invisible, but always present. The wants and whimsies of frequent clientele were catalogued in his voluminous memory bank. To call Albert a waiter was like saying Toni Morrison was a typist. Discretion and tact were hardwired into his DNA.
A party of 4 has just been seated at table 12.
Good News from...Texas?

In those dark days after November 3, I wandered around in the depressive gloom of the world of No Hope. For sure, I thought, we had bought a one-way, non-refundable, do not pass Go ticket to hell in a handbasket.
And I live in one of the bluest states around.
And then I remembered what Molly Ivins had said on a panel (on what and where and when has slipped through the ever increasing holes in the sieve formerly known as my brain). During the Q&A, an older man pointed out that WWII was supposed to be the war that ended all wars, but from the discussion that day, it seemed that the US had failed to learn any lessons from history at all and seemed condemned to repeat its errors over and over again. Why, then, he asked, should he have hope?
Molly's response:
Because it's a better way to be

The Kindness of Strangers
Mon Mar 21, 2005 at 07:51:37 PM PDT
There's much noise and heat and tearing out of hair over some of the, um, let us say more flamboyant styles of some dKos members. Most of it is, IMHO, much ado about nothing.
Wouldn't it be nice, though, to raise as much ruckus about the countless acts of spontaneous kindness and generosity that is enacted every single day in this village? It's not that we don't have our warm and fuzzy moments here. Surely the mojo lovefest known as Cheers and Jeers has become the paradigm for a warmer, gentler, dKos. Carnacki's Got a Happy Story series continues the theme. PastorDan not only reminds us how lucky we are, but makes a space for us to give thanks each week.
But, there's a lot more than that going on here...
Sympathy for the devil: Fire and brimstone edition
Sun Feb 27, 2005 at 01:42:15 AM PDT
Earlier today, Maryscott made a reference to Jean-Paul in Pastordan's WYFP problem. Don't know if this was her intention, but I took it to be a reference to Sartre's play,
No Exit in which he states that hell is other people.
Three characters are trapped in a room where the light is always on and they have no eyelids. Garcin lusts after Izen, a lesbian, who wants Estelle who, of course, wants Garcin.
For the rest of you insomniacs who like scary stories, my questions to you are...
Phighting Photoshoppers II: The Winners are...
Thu Feb 24, 2005 at 09:16:12 AM PDT
I have finally tallied up the "votes" and, let me tell you, it was (all together now)
hard work. Counting mojo, adding up the "me, too's" and "me, three's" (not to mention the mojo on those) and the combination votes was almost more than this poor mathematically-disabled brain could handle.
Without further ado...
Ward Churchill in Hawaii
Wed Feb 23, 2005 at 12:07:26 AM PDT
I don't know where to start. There's still unread messages and votes to tally on my other
diary but I'm still electrified by Churchill's talk tonight and thought I'd throw it out there.
Much of his speech followed what Inverted posted on his diary on Monday from the Counterpunch transcript. So I won't go in to much on what he said but would like to share my ramblings on the event itself.

I've collected the images that were posted on my
diary from yesterday as well as those that were posted on the
front page story plus a couple more.
What I'd like to do is select a few of them and see if any other blogs or websites would like to put them up. Vote with your mojo. If you don't want yours included, please let me know and I'll remove it.
And if you've got new ones, please add them below. Thanks.
